It’s October, and if you imagine that it’s 1820, Jacquette and her family are about to leave Finspång Castle and return to Stockholm for the season. Why? The castle has tile stoves, but it is not well-heated, and the roads typically get muddy by late fall. Not to mention the

Now, Yale is charging $350 for the public to play…with poor and patchy turf conditions.
So, what happened?
“For them to drop the ball, that doesn’t surprise me.”
A $30 million disaster: How did Yale let its newly restored golf course fall apart? (Gift Article)
Alums are upset about patchy grass, dried-out greens and want answers. "If someone gave you a Rembrandt, you’d take care of it."

What if the most interesting person in a king’s story isn’t the king?
History has a way of polishing the reputations of kings. But some people’s stories don’t fit the official portrait.
When I began researching the early-1800s romance between Sweden’s future King Oscar I and the young Countess Jacquette Gyldenstolpe, I discovered a woman whose life had been overshadowed by the flattering historical narrative surrounding the monarch.
Drawing on centuries-old family letters, memoirs, and court records, I set out to recover Jacquette’s perspective—and found the inspiration for my award-winning debut novel, Butterfly Games.
I’d love for you to join me for an engaging look at royal intrigue, the women history has neglected, and the fascinating space between documented fact and historical fiction. And yes—we’ll also talk about why there are only six degrees of separation between Napoleon I and a young Swedish countess named Jacquette.

A daughter demands answers. A mother demands respect.
And somewhere between the two is a baby whose very existence threatens the family`s reputation.
In the world of Butterfly Games, scandal can be more dangerous than the truth. And sometimes the people who should protect you are the ones you have most to fear.

Me: I’m going to work all afternoon.
Shih Tzu: That’s adorable.
Apparently my role in this household is less “novelist” and more “personal assistant to a very small, very demanding gentleman.”
Shih Tzu moms… if you know, you know. 😂

Larry and I are out to see #goldentempo run at Saratoga. I looked at a horse named Oscar, but kind of like in my historical novel, Oscar didn’t exactly cover himself in glory. #traversstakes

Was the Butterfly Game real?
Yes—and no. 🦋
While researching the Swedish royal court for Butterfly Games, I came across the word fjärilsleken—literally, “the butterfly game.”
It was used in connection with fleeting affairs and lovers who moved frivolously from one object of affection to another.
I knew almost immediately that I had my title.
But the Butterfly Game in the novel became something larger: a game of love, marriage, gossip, information, family connections, ambition, and power.
And Jacquette discovers that useful information can be turned against anyone.
Even her.
I tell the story behind the title in my new Literary Titan interview.
