One of the best things about being a writer is meeting new friends.
Thursday at @talltalesbooks in Atlanta, @vicky_alvear_shecter and I had such a wonderful conversation about 𝘽𝙪𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙡𝙮 𝙂𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙨 and her new release, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈—a powerful novel set in the Roman Empire.
It’s a fast-paced, deeply researched story about a young woman, Mia, who is manipulated by the powerful men around her, forced into the role of a Vestal Virgin, and later scapegoated when the patriarchy closes ranks to protect its own interests. Naturally, they label 𝐡𝐞𝐫 immoral and manufacture a sex scandal. Some things, sadly, haven’t changed nearly as much from Roman times as we might like to think.
A heartfelt thank-you to @talltalesbooks for hosting such a warm, welcoming event, and especially to owner Rebekah Hagedorn for creating such a lovely space for readers and writers to come together. I’m so grateful for the conversation and the new connections.
If you`re from the ATL, check out Tall Tales and Vicky`s great new book, which was published on January 20 by @hypatiapress. Find out more here: https://vickyalvearshecter.com/adult-historical-fiction/the-cleansing-a-novel-of-ancient-rome/.

The line is long, probably more than an hour, but the staff at @atlairport is so helpful and friendly. #flydelta
Please come to my event tonight so I do not end up alone in a Holiday Inn Express stress-eating Swedish candy while basketball plays in the background. Atlanta book people, I’m looking at you. 6pm. Be there. And, I`m with the amazing Vicky Alvear, local author extraordinaire. 📚🍬

Have you explored this year’s #31titleswomeninhistory list yet?
31 novels. 31 days. Women who shaped history — sometimes quietly, sometimes boldly, always powerfully.
I’m honored to be part of this lineup for Women’s History Month.
Which title have you read? Which one are you adding to your March list?
Celebrate. Learn. Read.

Butterfly Games has been included in #31titleswomeninhistory for Women’s History Month — and I’m so honored to be beside these extraordinary authors. 💙
Every day in March, a different novel celebrating women in history is featured. Mine was March 2… which I may have missed. Ahem. It`s my mother`s 90th birthday this week and things are hitting the fan.
But it’s never too late to celebrate remarkable women.
If you haven’t discovered Butterfly Games yet, this is your invitation. Court politics. Power. A woman navigating a world designed to silence her.
Celebrate. Learn. Read.
Thank you to @janisrdalywriter for curating such a thoughtful list.

I’m so grateful to @authormarthajean for her thoughtful, generous words about Butterfly Games.
As a fellow historical fiction author, Martha`s reflections on power, choices, and the quiet force of women in history felt especially meaningful to me.
Martha’s own historical novel, The Queen’s Musician, is one I absolutely adore, and her Substack is a wonderful place to read about history, craft, and creativity.
Link in first comment to read her piece.
"Twelve years. Enough said."
I opened up about the long journey to publish Butterfly Games with @TableReadMagazineUK — from reading the historical novel Désirée at age 14 to digging through centuries-old archives.
Read more about the inspirations and challenges behind the novel.

Special thanks to @allegraboverman for lending her expert photography skills, and to @lucysconfections for the tasty book cookies!
